Giving Voice to the Victims - A Project Roundtable, Zamboanga, Mindanao, April 28
Posted Thursday, 08 May 2008
Survivors from the Feb. 4 attack on Maimbung, Sulu, in Southern Philippines, which left eight civilians including a four-year-old girl dead, spoke at the The Philippine Human Rights Reporting Project roundtable on “Media, Civil Society, Human Rights & Peace” held in Zamboanga, Mindanao on April 28.
The roundtable organized by project partners in association with the
Western Mindanao State University and the Mindanao People's Caucus
called for the media to devote more space and time to the victim of
human rights abuses wherever they occur. Participants including
Zamboanga Archbishop Romulo Valles heard that being first with the
'news' did not guarantee accuracy and that the media needed to cover
incidents like Maimbung in far greater detail in an effort to uncover
the truth.
The Commission on Human Rights, Peace Advocates Zamboanga,
Mindanews and IWPR were among representatives from more than a dozen
local NGOs and media groups which agreed to set up 'Task Force
Maimbung,' - a collaborative movement designed to collect and
disseminate regular news of developments surrounding the investigation
of the Feb. 4 incident. The Armed Forces of the Philippines maintains
the military attack on Maimbung was a ‘legitimate encounter’ between
special forces and the Abu Sayyaf.
